2014 Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste
Regular price £120.40 Save £-120.402017 Reva, Barolo Ravera
Regular price £124.50 Save £-124.50The Réva winery in Monforte d'Alba dates back to 1867, but its modern era began in 2013, under the ownership of Miroslav Lekes from the Czech Republic. He appointed Gianluca Colombo as oenologist and has worked tirelessly to perfect the wines produced on the small 7.5-hectare estate, while also seeking to improve sustainability. Vineyard practice is 100% organic.
TASTING NOTES
One of the cherished 'crus' of Barolo, Ravera gives Nebbiolo that's staggeringly complex, and powerful, but balanced with velvety elegance. Scents are earthy, spicy and floral. Mainly showing as tar, crushed rose petals and allspice. Red and black fruits, particularly cherries are brilliantly pure and luscious. The sweet Turkish tobacco aromas at the end are a nice touch. Acidity is lively on the palate, finishing full-bodied and persistent, with velvety, dense tannins.
FOOD PAIRING
Try with fresh egg pasta topped with shaved white Piemontese truffles or hearty rabbit ragu risotto.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
Best cellared for a few more years, this will age superbly in the magnum format, and be drinking well, and still steadily improving, from 2021 onwards. From the Ravera cru vineyard.
2014 Chateau Pontet Canet
Regular price £126.30 Save £-126.30ABOUT THE WINE
Classified as a 5eme Cru Classe, own by the Tesseron family also owner of Lafon Rochet in St Estephe. Today, Chateau Pontet-Canet is owned and run by Alfred and Michel Tesseron. The Tesserons have vastly improved the quality of the Pontet-Canet wines which are now full-bodied and packed with ripe, chewy, black fruits and fine tannins with great aging potential.
2011 Chateau Leoville-Poyferre
Regular price £126.65 Save £-126.65ABOUT THE WINE
The history of the Leoville estates can be traced back to 1638, when all three Leoville properties were one. After the French Revolution, the estate was split into the Leovilles Barton, Poyferre and Las Cases. Purchased in the early 1900s by the Cuvelier family, Leoville-Poyferre lagged behind the other Leoville properties in terms of quality and renown, until 1979, when Didier Cuvelier took over management of the property. Extensive modernisation and replanting followed, culminating in the hiring of Michel Rolland in 1994. This program of improvement continues, and Leoville-Poyferre is currently one of the most impressive and exciting properties in Saint-Julien.
TASTING NOTES
Another stunning wine from an off-vintage from this ever-improving chateau. Superbly complex aromas of truffle, smoke and black cherry; sweet, soft fruit on the palate, with notes of coffee and earth. Tannic and bright, with beautiful balance. A gutsy, satisfying wine, from a vintage in which many of its peers lack depth on the palate; time in bottle will bring elegance and refinement.
FOOD PAIRING
Complex beef or lamb stews; would pair well with earthy, tomato-based sauces.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
Showing well already in 2018, this is a vintage to drink before 2030.
2013 Bodega Monteviejo, La Violeta
Regular price £127.60 Save £-127.602007 Deutz, William Deutz Champagne Brut
Regular price £130.00 Save £-130.00ABOUT THE WINE
One of the oldest members of Champagne's prestigious Grandes Marques houses, Champagne Deutz of Ay, France, has been making distinctive champagnes marked by finesse, elegance and complexity since 1838. The house has upheld the traditions of fine Champagne making handed down through five generations. Owning a significant portion of its own vineyards, Deutz selects only top-rated grapes from 275 acres of vineyards in the finest crus of Champagne. The wines are slowly and carefully aged in the chalk-walled cellars far beneath the historic village of Ay.
TASTING NOTES
The 2007 Brut Millesime William Deutz is a very pretty wine that is starting to show the first signs of aromatic maturity. Honey, vanilla, baked apple tart, smoke, slate, almond and spice notes add intensity to a core of orange confit and apricot fruit. The 2007 is overt and creamy, with attractive tropical overtones, and yet it very much retains the mid-weight sense of structure that is such a Deutz signature.
FOOD PAIRING
Spectacular on its own as an aperitif; also excellent with oysters.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
Mostly sourced from the Côte des Blancs, specifically the villages of Avize. Mesnil
and Qger, with 5% sourced from Viller-Marmery in the Montagne de Reims.
2011 Chateau Lascombes
Regular price £131.50 Save £-131.50ABOUT THE WINE
Château Lascombes, 2ème Cru Classé in 1855, bears the name of its first owner, Chevalier de Lascombes, born in 1625. At the turn of the 18th century, Jean-Francois Lascombes, a counselor at the Bordeaux Parliament, dedicated his wealth to making a great wine at Lascombes. The existing chateau was built in 1867 by Chaix d'Est Ange. Alexis Lichine took over the property in 1952, and oversaw a significant restructuring of the vineyard and cellars. In 1971, he sold to the English brewer, Bass-Charrington, who sold the estate to its current owners, American company Colony Capital in 2001.
TASTING NOTES
An unusually high proportion of Merlot was used in 2011 – easier to ripen, in this cool vintage. Bright, dark-berry fruit and dusty chocolate characterise the aromas; the palate is similarly bright and fresh, with an undertow of firm tannin. Toasty oak, blueberry, liquorice and forest floor add complexity to this exceptionally well-made wine. Approachable from 2018, with ageing potential until 2030.
FOOD PAIRING
Venison, creamy beef dishes, hard cheeses.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
A fascinating example of how winemakers, by tossing aside the usual blend, can produce truly exceptional wines from inimical vintages.
2018 Capanna, Brunello di Montalcino
Regular price £132.50 Save £-132.50The Capanna farm, owned by the Cencioni family since 1957, is situated in the Montosoli area, to the north of Montalcino. It was founded by Giuseppe Cencioni and, helped by his sons Benito and Franco, it was one of the first farms of the modern period of Brunello. The farm is still family-run from both a farming and winemaking viewpoint.
TASTING NOTES
Boasting an intense ruby red colour with captivating garnet undertones. The bouquet is beautifully complex, featuring lush red cherries, subtle hints of spice and vanilla undertones. It showcases a remarkable persistence and aromatic evolution. Harmonious and well-rounded, the wine possesses excellent tannin structure, resulting in a finish that lingers, demonstrating the true depth of the 2018 vintage.
FOOD PAIRING
This wine elegantly complements a wild boar ragu served over pappardelle pasta, or a Neapolitan pizza topped with buffalo mozzarella, San Marzano tomatoes, and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. A Florentine steak grilled to perfection or a rich, creamy spaghetti alla carbonara also make delightful pairings.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino showcases an elegant balance of power and finesse. To fully appreciate the wine's complexities, we suggest decanting at least 30 minutes prior to serving. The prolonged aging potential of this vintage makes it a true gem for collectors and wine enthusiasts alike.

TASTING NOTES
With 14% alcohol by volume, this Lascombes is perhaps one of the finest wine produced. Not a shy wine in any way, it over-delivers in every way one can imagine. Richness, complexity, smoothness. Drink it over the next 20 to 30 years.

FRIARWOOD SAYS
An incredible value for such an exceptional vintage and a respected chateau.
2005 Chateau La Lagune
Regular price £134.80 Save £-134.80ABOUT THE WINE
Chateau La Lagune and its 71.23 hectares of vineyard are located in the north of the Haut-Medoc appellation, in the commune of Ludon-Medoc. Chateau La Lagune's history can be dated back to the 16th when the vines were planted. However, it was not until 1730 that its winegrowing activity began. In 1957, Georges Brunet, a real estate entrepreneur and agricultural engineer took over the property and completely revolutionized the chateau and rebuilt the estate. He replanted the vineyard and expanded the estate. In 1964, Jeanne Boyrie became the first female estate-manager. She is renowned as one of the most conscientious, meticulous and able managers in Bordeaux. Following her death in 1986, her daughter Caroline Desverges took over. In 2000, Chateau La Lagune became the property of the Frey family.
TASTING NOTES
Its glorious 2005 has soft, sweet, ripe blackcurrant and black cherry fruit which blossoms within a lovely fragrant Margaux-style freshness and racy acidity. With lovely concentration, elegance and poise this should be a terrific bargain and looks sure to rival, if not surpass, their fabulous 1982.
FOOD PAIRING
We love this paired with some wine braised red meat or with aged cheese.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
This is the finest wine made at this estate since 1982, and possibly the greatest La Lagune of all time.
2021 Garrus
Regular price £135.00 Save £-135.00ABOUT THE WINE
Considered Château d’Esclans’ finest wine, Garrus is made from a single vineyard of nearly 100 year-old vines. Entirely fermented and aged in new large French oak barrels, the powerful and elegant Garrus was at the heart to Sacha Lichine’s vision in 2006 to make rosé grand. Today Garrus is firmly established as a world class, iconic luxury rosé.
TASTING NOTES
Concentrated aromas and flavors of dried citrus, peaches and passion fruit give this rosé a powerful nose. It has a bright acidity with glazed pear and pineapple filling the mid palate. Garrus’ toasty notes are reminiscent of a vintage Champagne without the bubbles. It has a long, vertical texture with a creamy finish that features rich, spicy notes. Powerful and elegant.
FOOD PAIRING
Excellent with caviar and goats cheese, or try with a rack of lamb or roast chicken and sautéed rosemary potatoes. Also excellent with grilled sole and cote de boeuf.
2006 Chateau Leoville-Barton
Regular price £135.50 Save £-135.50Chateau Leoville Barton is the smallest portion of the great Leoville estate and has been owned by the Barton family since 1826. There is no chateau and the wine is made at Langoa Barton. Leoville Barton's 48 hectares of vineyards are located in the east of the St-Julien wine appellation and lie on gravelly-clay soils. Since Anthony Barton took over the reins from his Uncle Ronald in the mid-80s, quality has soared at Leoville Barton and the wine has gone from being a solid mid-league performing 2eme Cru Classe to one of the most exciting and scintillating wines in St. Julien. The 2006 growing season was off to a good start in June and July, benefiting from a hot and dry summer. Temperatures began to cool down in August, followed by more heat in September, then rain.
TASTING NOTES
Stunning and powerful wine with a complex, perfumed nose of blackberry, cedar and spice. The palate is medium-bodied with concentrated, chewy tannins and flavours of wild blackberry, cassis and leather. There is a touch of mineral tension, followed by an elegant but powerful long finish. Another superb expression from Leoville Barton that will benefit from cellaring for 5 years.
2010 Chateau Talbot
Regular price £136.30 Save £-136.30ABOUT THE WINE
Legend has it that Chateau Talbot takes its name from a British soldier, Connetable Talbot, who was killed in a battle at Castillon in 1453; the estate was named in his honour. Since 1917, Talbot has been owned by the Cordier family. As with all notable chateaux, the family has invested heavily in Talbot to ensure that it achieves the quality levels of which it is capable. With 102 hectares of vineyards, Talbot is one of the largest estates in the Medoc; wines see 50-60% new oak, for around 15 months.
TASTING NOTES
One of the top examples of Talbot over the last decades, but this wine is all about opulence and fruit intensity and less so about complexity for now. Undoubtedly it will develop further to reveal much more. A fine, muscular wine from an exceptional year. This is one to keep even further.
FOOD PAIRING
Strong flavours; lamb, beef stews, cured meat.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
A fabulous Talbot to drink over the next 20-25 years.
2018 Pierre Mayeul, Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru “Petite Chapelle”
Regular price £138.10 Save £-138.10ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Pierre Mayeul is the story of three old friends united by the same passion for Burgundy and with a shared goal to produce high-quality wines where each cuvee beautifully represents the individual terroir and 'climat' of each appellation. Each with a long history of Burgundian winemaking they vinify their wines in an old castle in Ladoix and age the wines in barrels in cellars that date back to the 17th Century situated in the very heart of Beaune.
TASTING NOTES
Spends 18 months in 50% new French oak barrels adding beautiful complexity. Dark cherry colour with concentrated fruit on the nose, revealing blackberry, violet, hazelnut and nutmeg. The onset on the mouth carries fleshy and supple tannins, followed by a crunchy and bold palate, finishing off on silky smooth persistent fruit.
FOOD PAIRING
Deserves a robust meat dish such as game, prime rib or lamb.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
Will develop beautifully in the bottle for another 10 years.
2020 Domaine Antonin Guyon, Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru 'Les Pucelles'
Regular price £140.00 Save £-140.00ABOUT THE WINE
Domaine Antonin Guyon is one of the most prestigious estates in the Côte d’Or, as well as one of the largest family-owned wineries in the region. It was started in the 1960s by Antonin Guyon with parcels of land in Gevrey and Meursault. Les Pucelles is one of the best known and most famous of Puligny’s 1er Crus, just adjacent to the Grand Crus of Batard and Bienvenue Batard Montrachet. Grapes are hand-harvested and then carried in small boxes to the cellars, where they are sorted. The wine is aged for 15 months in French oak barrels.
TASTING NOTES
Ethereal aromas of pear, apple, lime and mixed with notes of mushroom and earth. There is an explosion of fullness on the palate with elements of honeysuckle and herbs. The finish is cool, precise, focused and very long.
FOOD PAIRING
Pairs well with lobster, seafood in cream sauces, chicken with wild mushrooms or soft cheeses.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
Guyon produces only three barrels (75 cases) of this exquisite wine from their tiny parcel of land!
2018 Domaine Antonin Guyon, Gevrey Chambertin 'La Justice'
Regular price £318.40 Save £-318.40The second generation now manages this domaine, founded by Antonin in the 1960s. Based in Savigny-les-Beaune, they own vines throughout the Cote d'Or, including parcels in some of the finest Premier and Grand cru vineyards. Harvest is by hand, with initial sorting in the vineyard; no more than 50% new oak is used, and the wines of the domaine have a classic freshness and purity to them.
TASTING NOTES
Beautiful ruby colour; the aromas are elegant and complex, with notes of redcurrant and cherry and a touch of cedar and smoke. The palate is intense, with black fruit and well-integrated nutmeg spice, softly fading into vanilla aromas on the finish. Plenty of weight to the palate, with a sufficient structure for longer-term ageing.
FOOD PAIRING
A more robust style of Burgundy, would suit a shepherd's pie; or tuna steaks.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
A favourite of sommeliers in restaurants throughout Europe, Guyon wines are particularly well-suited to food-pairing, with bright flavours and succulent acidity.

TASTING NOTES
Powerful, heavily-extracted, built for the long-term. Ripe, opulent aromas – blackberry, fig, cedar, smoke – and an oak-rich, grippy palate, with prune, cassis and black olive on the long, lingering finish. Best from 2020, and will age well until around 2050.

2014 Chateau Lagrange (Saint Julien)
Regular price £144.00 Save £-144.00Sold as Baron Saint Julien during the 18th Century when under the ownership of the Baron de Brane, Lagrange dates back to the middle ages, with definitive documentation going back to 1631. Originally one of the largest estates in the region, over the centuries Lagrange saw significant reductions in vineyard area, as plots were sold off to cover debts accrued by its owners. In 1983 the estate was purchased by the Japanese Suntory company, which proceeded to invest heavily in renovation and modernisation. A proportion of Petit Verdot was planted in 1988, white grapes were added in 1996; and the wines saw significant improvement, culminating in a number of exceptional vintages beginning in the year 2000.
TASTING NOTES
Cherry blackcurrant, liquorice and pepper; cool and elegant with a rich, spicy undertone that will carry the wine for further decades.
FOOD PAIRING
Ideal with pork dishes, which will not diminish the elegance of the wine.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
Produced from vines with an average age of 32 years.
2006 Chateau Clos Fourtet
Regular price £144.95 Save £-144.95ABOUT THE WINE
Château Clos Fourtet is a St. Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé property located just outside the entrance to the town. It is distinguished by its beautiful ivy-covered manor house and some of the most extensive underground cellars in the region. Clos Fourtet has had several owners over the years and underwent a mini-renaissance under the stewardship of the Lurtons in the latter half of the last century. Pierre Lurton was the winemaker who really established the property`s reputation as one of the finest on the St. Martin plateau. He left to become winemaker at Cheval Blanc and was replaced by Daniel Alard. In January 2001, Clos Fourtet was bought by Paris businessman Phillipe Cuvelier.
TASTING NOTES
The blend of 2006 consists of 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon & 10% Cabernet Franc. Despite 2006 being one of the ‘elegance over power’ vintages, this Fourtet proves it otherwise by demonstrating respectable power and intensity. This is perhaps thanks to the deep limestone plateau that side of St Emilion is known for.
Rounded and succulent notes of dark plums, bramble berries & preserved dark cherries accompany the warm, but an integrated oak blanket of vanilla, cedar and dark chocolate. At its peak drinking window as of 2022 and will stay there for another 5-6 years.
FOOD PAIRING
Pair with charcoal-grilled pork belly and braised beef stew with root vegetables.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
It should continue to evolve effortlessly for another decade.
2015 Chateau Palmer, Alter Ego de Palmer
Regular price £148.35 Save £-148.35ABOUT THE WINE
Château Palmer is named after a British officer, Colonel Charles Palmer (later Maj. General), who settled in Bordeaux in 1814. It is located in the centre of the Margaux appellation, and its vineyards lie on a plateau of clay and gravel soils. Historically the estate has always prided itself on the exceptional quality of its wines, declassifying whole vintages (as in 1963 and 1968) when conditions weren’t conducive to the usual high standards of the property. Classified as a 3ème Cru Classé, it punches significantly above its classification. Since the 2017 vintage, they have been certified 100% biodynamic.
TASTING NOTES
Composed of 52% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Petit Verdot, this vintage produced a sensational wine characterized by purity, beauty and aromas of blackberries, dark chocolate, walnuts, cedar and lavender. Medium to deep garnet-purple colour with a gorgeous nose of ripe plums, cassis and crushed cherries with touches of incense, lavender and chocolate box. Medium-bodied, finely crafted and vivacious in the mouth, finishing with great elegance and finesse. Ripe tannin, solid mid-palate depth and ample sweet fruit make it a great second wine of Palmer. Requires five to six years of bottle age to come together. Enjoy between 2020 - 2034.
FOOD PAIRING
Brilliant with grilled pork chops with apple chutney or seared duck breast with cherry sauce.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
This vintage’s production was 50/50 divided between the Grand Vin de Chateau Palmer and the Second Wine ‘Alter Ego’ de Palmer, a testament to its quality.
2014 Sequoia Grove, Cambium
Regular price £149.00 Save £-149.00ABOUT THE WINE
Sequoia Grove is located in the gem of the famed Napa Valley, in what’s known as the Rutherford Bench. The Bench is a very unique geological formation, as it is consisted of a special composition of soils and rocks, and is considered one of the most diverse terroirs in the world. With a mix of alluvial loams, limestone, chalk and red & black volcanic soils, it’s at the prime area for producing wine. As the legendary Napa pioneer André Tchelistcheff quoted, “it takes Rutherford dust to grow great Cabernet.” Founded in 1979, the estate is one of Napa’s cult estates for producing world-class Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.
TASTING NOTES
The most important wine of Sequoia Grove, the Bordeaux blend consists of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Syrah. It is blessed with profoundly intense notes of chocolate-coated cassis, blackberry, dark plum and dark cherry followed by clove, cinnamon, cigar box and black pepper and leather. The decadent finish lingers on with notes of cedar, truffle and dark chocolate. Aged 18 months in barrel, 2 years in bottle, 65% New French oak, and it was bottled in May 2016.
The 2014 Cambium has just started entering its optimum drinking window, so a bottle to enjoy now or until 2035.
FOOD PAIRING
One to pair with truffle-oil drizzled dry-aged Wagyu beef steaks and rich stews with red wine and hard, mature cheeses.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
The estate barn is blessed to be surrounded by some of the last remaining groves of huge, majestic sequoia trees. It is also known to house Napa’s first underground cellar.
