ABOUT THE WINE
The 2020 Le Volte dell'Ornellaia is the estate's expressive "second vin" or entry-level red wine, produced by the world-renowned Ornellaia winery in Bolgheri, Tuscany. While Ornellaia is famous for its top-tier Bordeaux-style blends, Le Volte is crafted to offer a more accessible, everyday expression of the estate's philosophy. It presents an innovative blend that marries the Tuscan tradition of Sangiovese (approx. 50%) with the international varieties of Merlot (approx. 30%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (approx. 20%). This composition balances the acidity and structure of the Tuscan grape with the smoothness and richness of the Bordeaux varietals. The wine is aged in a combination of concrete tanks and used barriques (previously used for the main Ornellaia wine), allowing it to soften while retaining a fresh, fruit-forward profile. It is classified under the IGT Toscana designation.
TASTING NOTES
The 2020 Le Volte dell'Ornellaia displays a vibrant, intense ruby red colour. The bouquet is immediately inviting, bursting with fresh, primary fruit aromas of red berries, wild strawberries, sour cherries, and blackcurrants. Herbal and spicy notes of Mediterranean scrub, black pepper, and tobacco leaf provide complexity. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, remarkably smooth, and well-balanced. It is approachable and fruit-driven, featuring a soft texture, integrated tannins, and a crisp, lively finish driven by the Sangiovese component.
FOOD PAIRING
This versatile and approachable wine pairs excellently with a wide range of everyday meals. Its soft structure makes it a great match for pizza, pasta with a variety of sauces, simple grilled meats like sausages or chicken, and vegetable dishes. It also complements cold cuts and medium-aged hard cheeses.
