ABOUT THE WINE

Château Coutet is one of the oldest and most esteemed estates in the Barsac appellation of Bordeaux, producing world-class Sauternes-style sweet wines since the 17th century. As a Premier Cru Classé from the 1855 Classification, Château Coutet is celebrated for its lush, complex, and beautifully balanced wines. The 2016 vintage was exceptional for Barsac, with ideal conditions that allowed for the perfect development of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), which concentrates the sugars and flavours in the grapes. Made from a blend of 75% Sémillon, 23% Sauvignon Blanc, and 2% Muscadelle, the 2016 Château Coutet offers a rich, layered profile that showcases the estate’s commitment to quality and terroir.

TASTING NOTES

The 2016 Château Coutet presents a golden hue and an expressive nose of apricots, honey, and ripe tropical fruits, accompanied by delicate floral and citrus notes. On the palate, this Barsac sweet wine is full-bodied, with a creamy texture and vibrant acidity that balances the wine’s natural sweetness. Flavours of candied orange peel, pineapple, and honeyed almonds unfold, with hints of vanilla and a touch of minerality. The finish is long and luscious, with a beautiful harmony of fruit and freshness, making it a compelling example of Sauternes-style Bordeaux.

FOOD PAIRING

This Premier Cru Barsac wine is a superb match for rich and flavourful dishes such as foie gras, blue cheese, and pâté. It also pairs beautifully with fruit-based desserts like tarte tatin, crème brûlée, or peach cobbler. For an adventurous pairing, try it with spicy Asian cuisine, as the wine’s sweetness and acidity complement bold flavours. Best served chilled at 10-12°C.

FRIARWOOD SAYS

The 2016 Château Coutet is a stunning vintage that reflects the quality and heritage of one of Barsac’s finest estates. With its blend of Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle, this wine offers a rich yet balanced profile, ideal for both early enjoyment and long-term ageing. Perfect for collectors and lovers of fine sweet Bordeaux wines, this wine will continue to develop complexity over the next 20-30 years.
