ABOUT THE WINE
Saxenburg Wine Estate, located in Polkadraai Hills, Stellenbosch, is one of South Africa’s most distinctive wineries. In 1989, Adrian and Birgit Bührer traded their Swiss roots for the Cape Winelands, breathing new life into a historic farmstead. Today, their children, Fiona and Vincent Bührer, carry on the family legacy, producing expressive, site-driven wines that reflect their deep respect for terroir. The Private Collection Pinotage 2021 is a prime example — elegant, complex, and a refined expression of this uniquely South African grape.
TASTING NOTES
Lighter and more elegant than many commercial Pinotages, this wine offers a refined take on the varietal. Bright notes of red cherry, raspberry, and blueberry are lifted by delicate floral hints and a whisper of earthy minerality. Balanced, nuanced, and expressive of its Polkadraai Hills origin.
FOOD PAIRING
Pair this South African red wine with seared duck breast, duck confit, or herb-crusted lamb. Its vibrant fruit and elegant profile also make it a great companion to mushroom dishes or roasted game birds.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
The guinea fowl, featured on every Saxenburg bottle, symbolises the heart and philosophy of the estate — grounded, expressive, and authentic. This is a Pinotage with finesse, crafted to challenge expectations and highlight South Africa’s world-class potential.
