ABOUT THE WINE
Divided from the original Pichon estate in 1850, Château Pichon Baron entered a new golden era after its 1987 acquisition by AXA Millésimes. Major investment and precision viticulture returned this Pauillac icon to the top tier, its 73-hectare vineyard lying on deep gravel terraces adjacent to Château Latour. In 2016, a long, temperate season with a late harvest favoured Cabernet Sauvignon, yielding a grand vin of purity, depth and classic Left Bank poise. Ageing was 18 months in oak (60% new).
TASTING NOTES
A Cabernet-led Pauillac of striking definition: cassis, blackberry and black cherry framed by cedar, graphite, cigar box and cocoa. The palate is concentrated yet finely sculpted, with silky, tightly knit tannins, vivid freshness and a long, mineral-saline finish. Power and precision in seamless balance; a benchmark 2016.
FOOD PAIRING
Perfect with grilled ribeye, slow-braised beef or venison, duck with black pepper or wild-mushroom dishes. Hard, nutty cheeses (Comté, aged Gouda) also shine.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
Around 30% of the crop was directed to the estate’s second wines in 2016, sharpening selection for the grand vin. Decant 1–2 hours if opening now; peak 2026–2050+.
