ABOUT THE WINE

The Colognole Estate, located in the Chianti Rùfina region of Tuscany, has deep roots in Italian winemaking history. Purchased in 1892 by Conte Venceslao Spalletti, a Senator of the Kingdom of Italy, the estate transitioned from lumber to wine and olive oil production in the early 20th century, thanks to the dedication of his sons, Giambattista and Cesar. The Spalletti family helped elevate the reputation of Chianti Rùfina wines, known for their elegance and age-worthiness. Today, Agriturismo Colognole continues that legacy with estate-grown wines like the Riserva del Don 2016, showcasing the region’s structure and finesse.

TASTING NOTES

This 2016 Chianti Rùfina Riserva presents a ruby red colour and a medium body. Aromas of ripe cherry and dark berry lead into layers of light spice, black olive, and a touch of balsamic and earthy undertones. On the palate, it’s smooth and refined, with velvety tannins and balanced acidity, offering great depth and a polished finish.

FOOD PAIRING

A natural pairing for traditional Tuscan cuisine, including grilled lamb, pork ribs, beef stew, and antipasti platters. Its savoury complexity also complements aged cheeses and mushroom-based dishes.

FRIARWOOD SAYS

A beautifully balanced Sangiovese-based red, this Chianti Rùfina Riserva benefits from extended barrel ageing, which adds elegance and depth to an already impressive wine.

While a Riserva is aged for at least 24 months, “Riserva del Don” signifies a premium Chianti aged for even longer. A traditionally higher quality wine reserved for the estate’s owner — the “Don.” This historic designation reflects both elevated ageing standards and the selection of the finest grapes, resulting in a wine of exceptional quality and distinction.
