ABOUT THE WINE

The legendary Château Talbot takes its name from Connétable John Talbot, a British commander who fell at the Battle of Castillon in 1453. Owned by the Cordier family since 1917, the estate has seen sustained investment in vineyard and cellar, raising quality to consistently high levels. With 102 hectares under vine, Talbot is one of the Médoc’s largest and most respected properties. The grand vin is traditionally matured for ≈15 months in French oak, 50–60% new, adding polish and complexity.

TASTING NOTES – 2012 VINTAGE

A classic, composed Saint-Julien from a cooler year: lifted aromas of cassis, blackberry and redcurrant mingle with cedar, graphite, cigar box and a hint of violet. Medium-bodied on the palate with fine, chalk-dusted tannins, lively acidity and a savoury slate/mineral thread. Focused and harmonious rather than showy, it finishes with blackcurrant, bay leaf and gentle spice. Drinking beautifully now, with further development ahead.

FOOD PAIRING

Superb with roast lamb, beef daube or venison; equally at home with wild mushroom risotto, herb-roasted root vegetables and firm, nutty cheeses like Comté or Manchego.

FRIARWOOD SAYS

Talbot 2012 is entering a lovely window of drinkability—decant 45–60 minutes to unfurl the aromatics. Enjoy now and over the next 8–12 years for textbook Left Bank elegance and poise.
