ABOUT THE WINE

Château Batailley 2020 (Half Bottle – 375ml)

Flagship of Borie-Manoux and the Castéja family, Château Batailley is one of the Médoc’s oldest estates. Named for the “bataille” fought here during the Hundred Years’ War, the Pauillac vineyard is today managed with precision, including a 5-hectare parcel under biodynamic trial. Hand-harvested fruit is fully destemmed, fermented in stainless steel, with malolactic split between tank and barrel; élevage is ~16 months in 60% new French oak. Since 1995, a gentle stylistic shift has brought greater finesse without losing Pauillac’s classic backbone.

TASTING NOTES

2020 is a poised, concentrated vintage: ripe cassis and blackberry framed by cedar, cigar box and graphite, with hints of crushed violets and cocoa. The palate is medium-to-full-bodied, polished and tightly woven, showing fine, chalky tannins and a long, savoury finish. Delicious now with a short decant; plenty of cellar potential in this half bottle format over the mid-term.

FOOD PAIRING

Roast rib-eye or dry-aged sirloin • Braised veal shank with root-veg purée • Roast duck with pear and radicchio • Hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda.

FRIARWOOD SAYS

Compact and classy Pauillac in a convenient half bottle—perfect for weeknights, gifting, or a two-glass treat. Drink now with 30–45 minutes in a decanter, or enjoy over the next 5–8 years for added tertiary complexity.
