La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904 is one of Spain’s most iconic wines, a benchmark for traditional Rioja winemaking. Produced by Bodegas La Rioja Alta, this 2011 vintage showcases the estate’s commitment to crafting age-worthy, complex, and elegant wines.
The 2011 vintage was marked by an exceptional growing season, with ideal weather conditions allowing for perfect ripening and balance. The wine is composed of 90% Tempranillo (sourced from vineyards over 60 years old) and 10% Graciano, aged for four years in American oak barrels before extended bottle maturation. This meticulous aging process results in a wine of remarkable depth, structure, and longevity.
TASTING NOTES
The 2011 Gran Reserva 904 pours a bright garnet-red with a brick-hued rim, showcasing its extended maturation. The nose is intensely aromatic, revealing layers of ripe red berries, dried cherries, and plums, interwoven with vanilla, caramel, tobacco, cedar, and spice from its time in oak.
On the palate, the wine is silky, well-balanced, and incredibly refined, with polished tannins and a vibrant acidity that gives it freshness. Flavours of dried fruit, balsamic notes, sweet spice, and toasted oak lead into a long, complex, and beautifully persistent finish. This vintage is drinking beautifully now but also has excellent aging potential for another decade or more.
