ABOUT THE WINE

The 2020 Montevertine, Montevertine is the historic, benchmark wine from the esteemed Tuscan producer, Montevertine. The estate, located in Radda in Chianti, is a legendary name in Italian wine, particularly known for its unwavering commitment to traditional, pure Sangiovese-based wines. The producer famously left the Chianti Classico Consortium in 1981 to avoid regulations requiring the blending of white grapes, choosing instead to focus on unadulterated, high-quality red wines classified as IGT Toscana. The 2020 vintage is a blend of 90% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo, and 5% Colorino grapes, grown on high-altitude, organically farmed vineyards. The wine is fermented in concrete vats and then aged for 24 months in large Slavonian and Allier oak barrels to ensure depth and finesse.

TASTING NOTES

The 2020 Montevertine is highly praised for marrying classic elegance with the ripe intensity of a warm vintage. It displays an intense ruby red color with purple reflections. On the nose, it offers a rich and complex bouquet of dark fruit, blue flowers, and delicate mineral highlights. Aromas of cherry, plum, strawberry, lavender, rose petal, mint, and sweet spice abound. The palate is full-bodied, structured, and luxurious, with a core of pure fruit, fine-grained tannins, and well-balanced acidity that provides freshness and a long, persistent finish.

FOOD PAIRING

This versatile wine, with its fresh acidity and structured tannins, pairs well with a variety of hearty dishes. It is an excellent match for traditional Tuscan cuisine such as pappa al pomodoro, ribollita, or pasta with rich, tomato-based meat sauces. It also complements grilled or roasted red meats, gamey meats, beef stews, salami, and semi-aged cheeses.
