Regular price £53.00 Save £-53.00ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Pierre Mayeul is the story of three old friends united by the same passion for Burgundy and with a shared goal to produce high-quality wines where each cuvee beautifully represents the individual terroir and 'climat' of each appellation. Each with a long history of Burgundian winemaking they vinify their wines in an old castle in Ladoix and age the wines in barrels in cellars that date back to the 17th Century situated in the very heart of Beaune. Matured in 50 % new oak barrels, with a slow fermentation with batonnage during ageing for 15 months.
TASTING NOTES
This wine has a yellow-gold colour. The nose is intense, and precise, with fresh honey and fine, yellow fruits. The wood is discreet, showing itself as brioche bread. The attack is round, and juicy, with citrus flavours. Thanks to its bright acidity, the mid-mouth is fresh. The finish has a fleshy texture and the persistence is long; the purity of the fruit makes it for a luscious final.
FOOD PAIRING
To be enjoyed with pan-fried scallops, filet mignon with morels, and Brie.

Regular price £60.00 Save £-60.00ABOUT THE WINE
Athanase de Villermont, the youngest son of a noble family inherited an extensive estate from his family in the Ay area. He immediately foresaw the extraordinary potential of the wines of Champagne, but as an aristocrat he was forbidden to become involved in trade. He then met Joseph Bollinger, a widely travelled German who had left his country of birth to learn about the Champagne wine trade, and Paul Renaudin, a local man who was fascinated by the world of wine. The firm of Renaudin-Bollinger & Cie was founded on 6th February 1829. Joseph took care of sales and Paul of the cellar. Athanase had founded a champagne House that was to endure through the centuries.
TASTING NOTES
Nice bronze tones combined with the intense depth of a great red wine. On the nose the nobility of red berries: hints of red currant, cherry and wild strawberry with a spicy touch. A subtle combination of structure on the palate, length and vivacity, with a tannic finish due to the adjunction of red wine Bubbles as fine as velvet. Flavours of wild berries.
FOOD PAIRING
Perfect for a picnic on a summer afternoon, as a pre-dinner drink or served with a fruity and tart dessert.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
Cellar aged for more than twice the time required by the appellation, this is a great rose!

2019 Madame Veuve Point, Gevrey Chambertin
Regular price £66.00 Save £-66.00ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Madame Veuve Point is the unique story of a woman winemaker whose wines won the Grand Prize at the 1904 Saint Louis World Fair, and have continued making excellent Burgundy wines ever since. Now, Géraldine Point is the latest generation of the family to pick up the torch and continue a hundred year old wine making tradition.
A dozen kilometers south from Dijon, at the foot of the Lavaux valley, Gevrey-Chambertin spreads its vineyards toward Côtes de Nuits over nearly 140 hectares. The canons of Langres have long watched over these vines, as proof of how far this nectar plunges its roots into the entire history of Burgundy wine. These red wines from Madame Veuve Point are entirely made from a single pinot noir variety, also called “pino noirien” in Burgundy.
TASTING NOTES
This Gevrey Chambertin is a very intense deep garnet colour. Strawberry, blackberry, violet, reseda and rose make up the aromas that gradually develop into a bouquet of licorice and leather. The palate is full, rich and powerful. It asserts itself with a firm structure and tannins that lean toward velvety, expressing a very fine grain. This is a wine with a solid frame and great longevity.
FOOD PAIRING
Beef prime rib, braised lamb, feathered or furred game. For a more adventurous pairing, consider monkfish or tuna steak with red wine sauce. It also goes well with Epoisses, Chambertin and Cîteaux cheeses.

The staggering complexity with white pepper, wet forest floor, sauteed mushrooms and the warm cinnamon bark from the oak marry impeccably.

This is drinking very well already, but it will probably show best at least 5 years from vintage.
2004 Chateau Sociando-Mallet
Regular price £72.00 Save £-72.00ABOUT THE WINE
Chateau Sociando-Mallet is located in the commune of Saint-Sevrin-de-Cadourne, in the north of Pauillac. Its 85 hectares of vineyard are very well situated with an amazing view on the Gironde estuary. The estate dates back to the 17th century when it belonged to the Sossiando family who were of Basque origin. The property was purchased by Jean Lamothe. His daughter then inherited it and in 1831. In 1969, after the succession of several owners, Jean Gautron took over the estate which had become extremely neglected, despite its excellent location. His hard-work and motivation are at the origin of the high reputation and quality of the Chateau Sociando-Mallet that we know today.
TASTING NOTES
Sociando Mallet's big, extracted, rich, classic 2004 boasts a deep ruby/purple hue as well as aromas of charcoal, wet stones, cold steel, and abundant black currant and cassis fruit. This medium to full-bodied, structured, powerful wine will benefit from 4-5 years of cellaring. It should last for two decades.
FOOD PAIRING
Great with roasted meats and vegetables, creamy dishes.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
Give it another 4-5 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 30 years.

TASTING NOTES
Bearing a dark ruby hue, an intoxicating aroma of wild blackberries, spicy undertones, clove notes and a whisper of raspberry reduction permeate the senses. The palate presents an exquisite tapestry of opulent dark fruits laced with nuances of espresso and a dash of black pepper. The well-integrated tannins lend a perfect depth to the vivacious fruit character, orchestrating a harmonious, velvety finish that echoes long after the final sip.

2006 Chateau Cantenac Brown
Regular price £115.50 Save £-115.50At the start of the 19th century, the well-known Scottish, animal painter, John Lewis Brown purchased the estate and Bordeaux wine vineyards. As was the tradition in the Medoc at the time, he renamed the estate Cantenac Brown. More recently, in 1989 AXA, the massive insurance company with several Bordeaux chateaux in their portfolio including Pichon Baron in Pauillac, and estates in Pomerol and Sauternes bought the vineyard. AXA sold the property in 2006 to the Halabi family.Today, the Simon Halabi family are the owners of Chateau Cantenac Brown. One of the first moves made by the new owners was to place Jose Sanfins in charge of the wine making at Cantenac Brown.
Aromas of blackberry, cherry, currant and lightly toasted oak. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and a fresh, clean finish. Very refined. Best to drink now.
Any game, red meat, super creamy cheese and fatty fish cooked with complex herbs and spices.
Cantenac Brown is typically Margaux in character - fragrant and perfumed on the nose and medium bodied and harmonious on the palate.

2011 Chateau Leoville-Poyferre
Regular price £126.65 Save £-126.65ABOUT THE WINE
The history of the Leoville estates can be traced back to 1638, when all three Leoville properties were one. After the French Revolution, the estate was split into the Leovilles Barton, Poyferre and Las Cases. Purchased in the early 1900s by the Cuvelier family, Leoville-Poyferre lagged behind the other Leoville properties in terms of quality and renown, until 1979, when Didier Cuvelier took over management of the property. Extensive modernisation and replanting followed, culminating in the hiring of Michel Rolland in 1994. This program of improvement continues, and Leoville-Poyferre is currently one of the most impressive and exciting properties in Saint-Julien.
TASTING NOTES
Another stunning wine from an off-vintage from this ever-improving chateau. Superbly complex aromas of truffle, smoke and black cherry; sweet, soft fruit on the palate, with notes of coffee and earth. Tannic and bright, with beautiful balance. A gutsy, satisfying wine, from a vintage in which many of its peers lack depth on the palate; time in bottle will bring elegance and refinement.
FOOD PAIRING
Complex beef or lamb stews; would pair well with earthy, tomato-based sauces.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
Showing well already in 2018, this is a vintage to drink before 2030.

FOOD PAIRING
Pairs well with lobster, seafood in cream sauces, chicken with wild mushrooms or soft cheeses.
FRIARWOOD SAYS

2008 Chateau Leoville-Barton
Regular price £141.55 Save £-141.55ABOUT THE WINE
Château Léoville Barton is the smallest portion of the great Léoville estate and has been owned by the Barton family since 1826. There is no château and the wine is made at Langoa Barton. Léoville Barton's 48 hectares of vineyards are located in the east of the St-Julien wine appellation and lie on gravelly-clay soils. Since Anthony Barton took over the reins from his Uncle Ronald in the mid-80s, quality has soared at Léoville Barton and the wine has gone from being a solid mid-league performing 2ème Cru Classé to one of the most exciting and scintillating wines in St. Julien.
TASTING NOTES
Powerful, heavily-extracted, built for the long-term. Ripe, opulent aromas – blackberry, fig, cedar, smoke – and an oak-rich, grippy palate, with prune, cassis and black olive on the long, lingering finish. Best from 2020, and will age well until around 2050.
FOOD PAIRING
Smoked duck, beef stew or lamb leg are all perfect pairings.
FRIARWOOD SAYS

2006 Chateau Clos Fourtet
Regular price £144.95 Save £-144.95ABOUT THE WINE
Château Clos Fourtet is a St. Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé property located just outside the entrance to the town. It is distinguished by its beautiful ivy-covered manor house and some of the most extensive underground cellars in the region. Clos Fourtet has had several owners over the years and underwent a mini-renaissance under the stewardship of the Lurtons in the latter half of the last century. Pierre Lurton was the winemaker who really established the property`s reputation as one of the finest on the St. Martin plateau. He left to become winemaker at Cheval Blanc and was replaced by Daniel Alard. In January 2001, Clos Fourtet was bought by Paris businessman Phillipe Cuvelier.
TASTING NOTES
The blend of 2006 consists of 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon & 10% Cabernet Franc. Despite 2006 being one of the ‘elegance over power’ vintages, this Fourtet proves it otherwise by demonstrating respectable power and intensity. This is perhaps thanks to the deep limestone plateau that side of St Emilion is known for.
Rounded and succulent notes of dark plums, bramble berries & preserved dark cherries accompany the warm, but an integrated oak blanket of vanilla, cedar and dark chocolate. At its peak drinking window as of 2022 and will stay there for another 5-6 years.
FOOD PAIRING
Pair with charcoal-grilled pork belly and braised beef stew with root vegetables.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
It should continue to evolve effortlessly for another decade.
