2019 Domaine Gilles Flacher Saint Joseph Terra Louis
Regular price £45.70 Save £-45.70The Flacher family has been making wine in the northern Rhone since 1806. Gilles is now managing an estate of 7 hectares, mainly in the Saint-Joseph appellation. Their wines are all from single-vineyard sites situated in and around the commune of Charnas, on the western banks of the Rhone. The majority of the vineyards are on terraced slopes, making mechanisation impossible, and most vineyard work continues to be done by hand.
TASTING NOTES
Very dark in colour. There is a swirl of oak, dark chocolate, and a touch of sweet blackberries on the nose. 50% new oak; prominent but not overwhelming. The palate holds sleek black fruit that lingers juicily on the finish.
FOOD PAIRING
Perfect with a dry aged ribeye, slow roasted lamb shoulder and venison.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
A standout staff-favourite; high-quality and supremely enjoyable.
2016 Chateau Cantenac Brown, Brio
Regular price £45.70 Save £-45.70Purchased by the Scottish painter, John Lewis Brown, at the beginning of the 19th Century, who added his name to the estate, and designed the Tudor-style mansion that graces the property today. A series of owners followed, and the estate suffered from a lack of investment, until 1989, when it was acquired by AXA Millésimes. Over the subsequent decade they worked tirelessly to improve the estate, and in 2006 the sold a greatly improved Cantenac-Brown to the Simon-Halabi family. Under this ownership the estate saw its three greatest vintages – 2009, 2010 and 2015 – before being sold once again in 2019.
TASTING NOTES
A blend of 49% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon & 11% Cabernet Franc, with a year in French oak barrels, 25% of which are new and 75% of them one-year-old barrels. The 2016 vintage captures the essence of a balanced vintage with enough flavour intensity while preserving the charming perfumed violet and rose notes. A full, velvety structure gives way to a long dark plum finish. A very precise and enjoyable Margaux that over-delivers for its value.
FOOD PAIRING
Roast quail with celeriac remoulade and pan-dried Jerusalem artichokes
FRIARWOOD SAYS
51% of the harvest was declassified for the second wine in 2016, with grapes that would usually be reserved for the Grand Vin adding to the depth and complexity of the Brio; this will be drinking well from 2021, and will continue to develop for a further decade.
2018 Chateau Nouret Cru Bourgeois
Regular price £46.00 Save £-46.00A 21-hectare estate purchased by the current owners in 2012. Extensive investment in the winemaking facilities and vineyards has seen considerable improvements in the quality of the wines produced. An estate on the rise.
TASTING NOTES
Blackcurrant, blueberry, toast and leather, with a fresh, accessible palate and impressive structure. 12 months in oak, 30% of which is new oak, providing additional complexity and a plush refined mouthfeel.
FOOD PAIRING
Try it with a juicy burger or beef stroganoff.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
The more exposed terroir of Bas Medoc ('lower' Medoc) receives a greater amount of Atlantic weather than appellations further up the Gironde estuary; successful viticulture in this mild, humid climate is often very dependent on vintage-conditions. The late-summer heat of the 2018 vintage provided ideal conditions for this wine.
2019 Bodega Monteviejo, Lindaflor Chardonnay
Regular price £46.20 Save £-46.20Bodega Monteviejo is owned and run by the Pere-Verge Family who also owns various other Chateaux in Pomerol, these are Chateau Montviel, Chateau La Gay and the world famous Chateau La Violette. Monteviejo is a true expression of Argentinian character, made by the world famous winemaker Marcelo Pelleriti. The wines made at this very special property in Argentina are treated with the same commitment and care as those produced back home in Bordeaux. The vineyards over 100 hectares, are located in the Tunuyan region, just 80km south of the city of Mendoza. Their aim is to create wines that can compete with the world's best. The yields are kept low, with vines planted at a density of 5,500 vines per hectare, to produce the best quality wine.
TASTING NOTES
A rich, oak-aged Chardonnay with Argentinian sunshine, but well-balanced with a crisp acidity from the high-altitude and this freshness is coupled with a subtle smoky flavour, layered with sweet spices and brown butter.
FOOD PAIRING
Complements many fish and white meat dishes, as well as robust pastas and spicy food. Also, best with cream based casseroles and salted cod.

2020 Domaine Nudant, Ladoix Chardonnay
Regular price £47.20 Save £-47.20ABOUT THE WINE
Winemakers in Burgundy since 1453, the current generation of the Nudant family manages some 16 hectares of small parcels dotted throughout the Cote d'Or. Vineyard work is all carried out by hand, in the spirit of minimal intervention. The vines for this Bourgogne are situated in the village of Chorey-les-Beaune.
TASTING NOTES
With just the smallest touch of oak character, this is a retrained style of Bourgogne. A wine to enjoy in its youth.
FOOD PAIRING
Chicken and root vegetables, and delicately flavoured cheeses.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
Easy-going Chardonnay, from a village better known for red wines. 10 000 bottles produced.
2016 Cascina Ebreo, Segreto Barbera
Regular price £47.20 Save £-47.20In 1991, Peter Weimer gave up corporate life in Switzerland and moved to Piedmont, purchasing Cascina Ebreo. They released their first vintage in 1996, and have since won great acclaim for their unusual, expressive wines.
TASTING NOTES
A bright, extracted style of Barbera, sourced from a small half-hectare plot in the Ravera cru vineyard-area. Wild berries, wood-spice and herbal complexity on the aromas; the palate is beautifully balanced by refreshing acidity. Exceptional wine, with a quality reminiscent of Burgundy Grand Cru.
FOOD PAIRING
Excellent with rich meat dishes, like stews, or meat pies. Game, beef or lamb would all work very well indeed.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
While the producer prefers to avoid the term ‘natural’ for his wines, these are certainly minimal intervention, in both the vineyard and the cellar. Farming is organic, with some biodynamic practices, and the only addition in the cellar is a minimal quantity of sulphur dioxide.
2020 Agriturismo Colognole, Chianti Rufina
Regular price £47.20 Save £-47.20In 1892, Conte Venceslao Spalletti, Senator to the Kingdom of Italy and owner of a fine agricultural estate in upper Emilia, purchased the Colognole and Lucciano (in Chianti Montalbano) estates. Colognole was initially utilised mainly for lumber production, thanks to its extensive forests, but in 1912, due to the interest shown from the Conte's sons, Giambattista and Cesar, production focused on grapevines and olive trees. This development led, in the 1930s, to the construction of the Cantine Spalletti in the city of Rufina. Production significantly increased both in quantity and quality, and in the 1960s the name Spalletti had become synonymous with high-quality Tuscan wine, particularly for age-worthy reds. In the 1980s, with the addition to the shareholders of a large sparkling-wine producer, the owner gave up both the production cellar and the name Spalletti and concentrated their efforts on the Colognole Estate.
TASTING NOTES
A medium body with a ruby red colour. Cherry fruit on the nose with darker fruit, light spice and earth on the palate, extremely smooth, and velvety tannins, and perfect acidity and well-balanced.
FOOD PAIRING
It goes particularly well with traditional Tuscan meat dishes, such as grilled lamb, pork ribs, stew, and antipasto.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
We love this Chianti, from an area that produces softer wines compared to the Classico counterpart.
2019 Domaine Nudant, Ladoix 1er Cru 'Les Buis'
Regular price £47.20 Save £-47.20ABOUT THE WINE
Winemakers in Burgundy since 1453, the current generation of the Nudant family manages some 16 hectares of small parcels dotted throughout the Cote d'Or. Vineyard work is all carried out by hand, in the spirit of minimal intervention. The 1er Cru vineyard called Les Buis recalls a sacred tree of the Druids which grew on the site.
TASTING NOTES
An impeccable vintage, 2019 Burgundies show opulent and exuberant red and dark fruits, with a balanced zingy acidity still in play. Ladoix, being a more elegant village, offers the best of both worlds by providing the quintessential savoury notes of mushrooms and forest floor. But this time, the ripeness of 2019 makes this wine extra attractive to sip, even by itself. One to drink now or to age for another decade.
FOOD PAIRING
Excellent with honey-roasted pork shoulder and braised root vegetables as well as a lamb leg bourguignon.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
An off-piste appellation which offers excellent value from some very impressive vineyard sites.
2014 Chateau Berliquet

Typically a blend of 67% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon.
TASTING NOTES
Red and black fruit, with notes of fruitcake and roasted herbs; medium-bodied and fairly easy-going. Fragrant and appetising.
FOOD PAIRING
Great with grilled steak, aubergine pasta or bacon tartlet.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
Early-drinking Saint-Emilion, from a very reliable estate.
2016 Chateau Les Ormes De Pez
Regular price £48.40 Save £-48.40Known as Domaine de Pez in the 1500s, the current name was taken after the French Revolution, and refers to the elm trees that used to grow on the estate, around the town of Pez. The chateau has been in the Cazes family since 1940 when it was purchase by Jean-Charles Cazes. The winemaking facilities were renovated in 1993, and the winemaking team is shared with Chateau Lynch-Bages. New oak is used to add extra richness to the wine, and over time the percentage of Merlot has gradually increased. A well-earned reputation for consistency and quality has made Ormes de Pez one of the most sought after Cru Bourgeois wines.
TASTING NOTES
Fruity, with tobacco and herbal spice notes adding complexity. Finished on a dusty red cherry note. Medium-bodied; from an exceptional vintage.
FOOD PAIRING
The high proportion of Merlot in the blend lends this to lighter stews and meat dishes.
2014 Chateau Fonplegade
Regular price £48.70 Save £-48.70See more wines from Chateau Fonplegade
ABOUT THE WINE
For centuries, the vine rows of Chateau Fonplegade have been the source for some of St. Emillion's most coveted grapes. Since 2004, new owners from California, Stephen and Denise Adams, have invested time and passion to elevate the wines of Fonplegade to new heights.
TASTING NOTES
Lots of fruit, already showing an appealingly soft roundedness. Incredibly smooth tannins are supported by a wonderful acidity that provides a remarkably long finish. Deep purple colour. A modest amount of grapes from somewhat younger vines is also incorporated into the blend, adding voluptuous black fruit notes and a tannic structure.
FOOD PAIRING
Roast beef, stews, lamb chops, barbecue.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
This is an absolutely brilliant wine, and probably the best to date from this American-owned Chateau, which has been completely renovated and is now enjoying a resurrection/renaissance in quality.
2019 Domaine Antonin Guyon, Savigny les Beaune 'Les Goudelettes'
Regular price £48.80 Save £-48.80The second generation now manages this domaine, founded by Antonin in the 1960s. Harvest is by hand, with initial sorting in the vineyard; no more than 50% new oak is used, and the wines of the domaine have a classic freshness and purity to them.
TASTING NOTES
Coming from their home village. Pretty gold-rimmed ruby in colour; bright red fruit with very fine, elegant tannin. Excellent ageing potential.
FOOD PAIRING
Ideal with roasted meats or a more classic pairing, confit duck.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
Long fermentation takes 15 days in wooden open vats. 15 months of barrel ageing.
