2018 Cave de Ribeauville, Pinot Blanc Collection Vendanges Manuelles
Regular price £20.30 Save £-20.30Created in 1895 by wine-growers from the town of Ribeauvillé, the Cave de Ribeauvillé - the oldest such cooperative in France - is something of a pioneer in Alsace. Its members own portions of some of the finest vineyards in the region, and their plots contribute to their exceptional range of wines.
TASTING NOTES
Light and crisp, with delicate fruit character. Floral aromas dominate, with acacia, zesty lemon, white peach and candied apple. The palate is mineral and citrusy, with fresh acidity which adds length to the finish.
FOOD PAIRING
A good pairing for white-fish or for shellfish.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
A dry wine, very enjoyable and excellent value.
2018 Domaine des Masques, Blanc 'Essentielle'
Regular price £19.60 Save £-19.60ABOUT THE WINE
An olive-grove since the time of the ancient Gauls, the plateau near Aix-en-Provence upon which Le Domaine des Masques rests was settled by the Knights Templar of the Order of Provence in the Middle Ages. Vines were first planted in 1992, and in 2003 the estate was bought by Carl and Sophie Mestdagh. The vineyards are tended according to organic principles, although the estate has not sought certification. With duties in the cellar overseen by the famous Rhône winemaker, Yves Cuilleron, the estate is in excellent hands, and producing exceptional wines.
TASTING NOTES
Harvested a little earlier than the Exception, to preserve the fresh fruit-character of the wine. Vinification is in sealed vats to limit exposure to oxygen. Delicate citrus, peach, apple and pear aromas; fresh yet full-bodied on the palate.
FOOD PAIRING
An excellent aperitif, also perfect with grilled fish. A lovely wine with a cold lunch-spread.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
The reductive (oxygen-free) winemaking allows for the bare minimum of sulphur to be used in this wine.
2018 Chateau Vignol Red
Regular price £14.80 Save £-14.80The Doublet family has been rooted in the vineyards of Bordeaux since the end of the 18th century, when the Chateau was re-designed after a southern Louisiana mansion. The property was once owned by the famous philosopher Montesquieu, who believed wine helped him think.
TASTING NOTES
Red fruit, dried leaves, with hints of oak before developing into powerful red and sour cherries notes. On the finish the wine has hints of truffles and oak, before softening into a balanced aftertaste.
FOOD PAIRING
Delicious with tartar, grilled veal and lamb cutlets. The wine is a staple for BBQ season on the patio with friends or as a after dinner with hard cheeses.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
Very easy drinking and soft, perfect for a barbecue dinner.
2018 Domaine Ellevin, Chablis
Regular price £50.60 Save £-50.60ABOUT THE WINE
For as far back as they can trace their history, the Ellevin family has always been making wine. In 1975, Jean-Pierre Ellevin and his wife started to develop the family domaine; in 2003, their son Alexandre joined them. The estate covers 16 hectares, planted exclusively with Chardonnay.
TASTING NOTES
Elegant, smooth and dense with rich flavours of lemons, pears, and fresh citrus on the palate. Crisp minerality and stone-fruit nuances blend seamlessly with a hint of fleur de sel. The texture is beautiful, the finish is balanced and the wine is perfection.
FOOD PAIRING
Ideal with seafood, appetisers, light fish and chicken or very good on its own as well.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
An ever-reliable favourite; this is an excellent Chablis from a small, quality-focused domaine.
