2015 Chateau Marquis d'Alesme
Regular price £68.10 Save £-68.10ABOUT THE WINE
Château Marquis d'Alesme is a distinguished wine producer that has been tending to an exceptional terroir in the heart of the Bordeaux region since 1616. With a unique combination of mystique and classicism, the estate is a land of culture and passion that consistently delivers premium Margaux wines.
The vineyard, spanning 15 hectares, is managed in a meticulously individual manner, much like a beautiful garden, with utmost care and craftsmanship by the team.
TASTING NOTES
The grapes of this wine were carefully selected by hand and underwent rigorous sorting in both the vineyard and cellar. Fermentation took place in 80 hl truncated wooden and stainless steel vats, followed by malolactic fermentation in barrels. The wine was aged in French oak barrels, consisting of 65% new and 35% first-fill barrels, with 3 months spent on lees. This Margaux wine is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot. The nose is complex and rich, with fragrances of black fruit such as dark mulberries, liquorice, and smokiness. The palate has a lively vibrancy, followed by powerful yet, silky and elegant tannins. This wine is not shy but provides lush exuberance with layered, deep fruit notes with savoury complexity, which linger in the long, showy finish.
FOOD PAIRING
Juicy and tender grilled lamb chop with a balsamic reduction with creamy garlic mashed potatoes, and mushroom duxelles
FRIARWOOD SAYS
The vines, averaging 40 years of age, are planted on clay-limestone, silica-gravel and silica-marl soils.
2009 Chateau Lascombes
Regular price £70.50 Save £-70.50ABOUT THE WINE
Chateau Lascombes, a Margaux ranked Second Growth in the 1855 classification, bears the name of its first owner, Chevalier de Lascombes, born in 1625. At the turn of the 18th century, Jean-Francois Lascombes, a counsellor at the Bordeaux Parliament, dedicated his wealth to making a great wine at Lascombes. The existing chateau was built in 1867 by Chaix D'Est Ange. Alexis Lichine took over the property in 1952. He completely restructured Chateau Lascombes and renovated the vineyard and cellars, giving this large vineyard new life. In 1971, he sold everything to the English brewer, Bass-Charrington. Since its purchase in April 2001 by Colony Capital, a new era has begun for this property.
TASTING NOTES
The wine has a beautiful blueberry-scented nose with hints of acacia flowers, liquorice, graphite and some subtle charcoal and background oak. Clearly a modern style of Margaux, it is pure, seamless, full-bodied and opulent, and the high glycerin and silky texture of 2009 are brilliantly displayed in this wine.
FOOD PAIRING
Venison, creamy dishes, hard cheese are a perfect pair with this wine!
2015 Chateau Dauzac
Regular price £71.65 Save £-71.65A relatively obscure Fifth Growth, the history of Dauzac goes back to 1671, when the farm was sold to an order of Carmelite nuns. A succession of notable owners followed, until the Great Depression forced the sale of the estate at auction to an ice-cream manufacturer, Jean-Jacques Bernat. He brought a number of innovations to the estate, including temperature-control for the fermentation-vats. In 1988 the estate was purchased by the current owners, an insurance company, MAIF. They lacked the expertise to manage the property, though, and so Andre Lurton (owner of La Louviere and Couhins-Lurton in Pessac-Léognan) took over the running of the estate until the 2014 vintage. A large estate, at 120 hectares, of which only 45 are planted to vines.
TASTING NOTES
Medium-bodied, with a supple texture; cherries and earth on the palate. Not especially complex, but this will come with bottle-age. Drinking well already, this will likely be at its best 10 years from vintage.
FOOD PAIRING
A versatile wine for pairing; a fine, punchy pairing for a beef-burger...
FRIARWOOD SAYS
The estate includes an experimental 0.6hectare block of own-rooted Cabernet Sauvignon vines farmed biodynamically; the rest of the vines on the estate are relatively young though, at an average of 20 years.
2004 Chateau Sociando-Mallet
Regular price £72.00 Save £-72.00ABOUT THE WINE
Chateau Sociando-Mallet is located in the commune of Saint-Sevrin-de-Cadourne, in the north of Pauillac. Its 85 hectares of vineyard are very well situated with an amazing view on the Gironde estuary. The estate dates back to the 17th century when it belonged to the Sossiando family who were of Basque origin. The property was purchased by Jean Lamothe. His daughter then inherited it and in 1831. In 1969, after the succession of several owners, Jean Gautron took over the estate which had become extremely neglected, despite its excellent location. His hard-work and motivation are at the origin of the high reputation and quality of the Chateau Sociando-Mallet that we know today.
TASTING NOTES
Sociando Mallet's big, extracted, rich, classic 2004 boasts a deep ruby/purple hue as well as aromas of charcoal, wet stones, cold steel, and abundant black currant and cassis fruit. This medium to full-bodied, structured, powerful wine will benefit from 4-5 years of cellaring. It should last for two decades.
FOOD PAIRING
Great with roasted meats and vegetables, creamy dishes.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
Give it another 4-5 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 30 years.
2019 Madame Veuve Point, Meursault
Regular price £72.00 Save £-72.00ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Madame Veuve Point is the unique story of a woman winemaker whose wines won the Grand Prize at the 1904 Saint Louis World Fair, and have continued making excellent Burgundy wines ever since. Now, Géraldine Point is the latest generation of the family to pick up the torch and continue a hundred year old wine making tradition.
The Meursault vineyard occupies the southern part of the Côte de Beaune and extends over gentle slopes. The vineyard finds its excellence in its limestone soils, creating some of the best Chardonnay wines in the Côte de Beaune!
TASTING NOTES
Its golden appearance, clear and brilliant, is accompanied by silvery highlights. On the nose you'll find notes of almond, grilled hazelnuts, butter and honey, white flowers (hawthorn, elder, fern, linden, and verbena) and mineral (flint). In the mouth, the combination is structured around a rich, full body with flavors of hazelnut and toasted bread. There is an excellent balance between fullness and freshness.
FOOD PAIRING
This wine has the breadth to accompany poultry and meats in cream sauce. It pairs perfectly with shellfish, both grilled and in sauce such as shrimp or lobster. Blue cheeses and foie gras are an excellent match too.
2018 Pierre Mayeul, Beaune 1er Cru “Les Sizies”
Regular price £72.10 Save £-72.10ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Pierre Mayeul is the story of three old friends with long-standing winemaking history in Burgundy. United by the same passion for this beloved region, they are committed to producing high-quality wines, where each cuvee beautifully represents the individual terroir and 'climat' of the appellation. Harvest is manual, followed by selective sorting to maintain quality control throughout production. Wines are vinified in an old castle in Ladoix and aged in barrels in cellars that date back to the 17th Century situated in the very heart of Beaune.
TASTING NOTES
Complex nose of figs, dates, strawberry, creamy chocolate and bitter cocoa. The mouth is persistent and full-bodied with ripe tannins. A refined palate that is perfectly balanced and richly layered with concentrated yet fresh fruit and cocoa - everything is there! A supreme example of a Beaune 1er Cru.
FOOD PAIRING
Succulent veal or rich boeuf bourgiognon would be excellent. A juicy steak with a herbaceous mushroom sauce would also make for an excellent pairing.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
If serving in its youth, we recommend decanting to enjoy its complexity fully. However, this wine is perfectly armed for ageing. Give it another few years for that extra wow factor.
2018 Pierre Mayeul, Pommard
Regular price £72.10 Save £-72.10ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Pierre Mayeul is the story of three old friends united by the same passion for Burgundy and with a shared goal to produce high-quality wines where each cuvee beautifully represents the individual terroir and 'climat' of each appellation. Each with a long history of Burgundian winemaking they vinify their wines in an old castle in Ladoix and age the wines in barrels in cellars that date back to the 17th Century situated in the very heart of Beaune.
TASTING NOTES
Lovely complex nose of black fruit, lavender, cherry and cinnamon. The oak is subtle, adding a touch of vanilla to the layers. As a classic Pommard, the tannins are silky smooth, followed by a medium-body palate with flavours of tart cherry, liquorice and a hint of menthol. Perfectly balanced style, ending on a slightly oaky, long finish.
FOOD PAIRING
Coq au vin would be an obvious choice! Also pairs perfectly with couscous and tagine or a succulent roast duck!
2019 Pierre Mayeul, Nuits Saint Georges Blanc
Regular price £72.50 Save £-72.502014 Chateau Leoville Las Cases, Petit Lion
Regular price £72.55 Save £-72.55The largest of the three ‘Leoville’ properties, with 97 hectares of vineyard spread throughout the appellation of Saint-Julien. Classified 2ème Cru, the wines of this estate are unquestionably of 1er Cru quality. The history of the estate can be traced back to 1638, when all three Leoville properties were one, and were the site of many winemaking and viticultural innovations which remain in use to this day. After the French Revolution, the estate was split into the Leovilles Barton, Poyferre and Las Cases. Following acquisition in 1976, the estate has achieved ever-growing esteem under the ownership of Michel Delon.
TASTING NOTES
Bright and expressive in this vintage, with a weight comparable to the grand vin. Silky tannins frame a fresh, fruit-driven palate, with oyster-shell minerality on the finish. An impressive wine, fragrant and exceptionally well-crafted, typical of this estate.
FOOD PAIRING
Ideal for beef or vegetarian stews, and quite suitable for lamb as well, given the aromatic intensity of the wine.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
Excellent value, relative to the grand vin, from an under-rated vintage – the market was looking forward to the 2015 vintage, and so the attention (and therefore prices) given to the 2014 wines was somewhat less; the quality, however, was not.
2014 Chateau Branaire Ducru
Regular price £74.00 Save £-74.00Chateau Branaire Ducru has a long history that goes all the way back to 1680. Patrick Maroteaux bought Branaire Ducru in 1988 from the Tapie family who had owned the chateau since 1919. Extensive technical improvements have allowed Branaire Ducru to become one of the most impressive wines to come out of Saint-Julien. Typically, there is a high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, which contributes to the wine's distinctive style and quality.
TASTING NOTES
65% Cabernet Sauvignon in this vintage; deep ruby colour with jammy black raspberry, spice and toasty oak perfume. Strong, ripe tannins, with fresh cassis, black olive and blackberry on the palate; complex, perfectly balanced, probably the best vintage of Branaire Ducru yet!
FOOD PAIRING
Great with mushroom risotto, lamb with spicy vegetables and aged hard cheeses.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
Exceptional value relatively to quality; and a very special, iconic vintage for the chateau. Showing best after 2020.

2014 Chateau Cantenac Brown
Regular price £77.85 Save £-77.85ABOUT THE WINE
The Chateau for Cantenac Brown is unique in the Bordeaux wine appellation. It is perhaps the only Bordeaux chateau designed as a traditional Tudor estate in the entire region! At the start of the 19th century, the well-known Scottish, animal painter, John Lewis Brown purchased the estate and Bordeaux wine vineyards. As was the tradition in the Medoc at the time, he renamed the estate Cantenac Brown. More recently, in 1989 AXA, the massive insurance company with several Bordeaux chateaux in their portfolio including Pichon Baron in Pauillac, and estates in Pomerol and Sauternes bought the vineyard. AXA sold the property in 2006 to the Halabi family.Today, the Simon Halabi family are the owners of Chateau Cantenac Brown. One of the first moves made by the new owners was to place Jose Sanfins in charge of the wine making at Cantenac Brown.
TASTING NOTES
Among the finest Cantenac-Browns of the last three decades, the saturated purple-coloured 2000 is a sleeper of the vintage. Loaded with chocolatey black currants intermixed with sweet earth, cedar, and spice box, it exhibits medium to full body, surprisingly ripe tannin for a wine from this estate, a multi-layered texture as well as mid-palate, and a finish that lasts 25-30 seconds.
FOOD PAIRING
Any game, red meat, super creamy cheese and fatty fish cooked with complex herbs and spices. Lamb curry.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
This is the wine for you if into earthy, tannic full-bodied wines.

FOOD PAIRING
Fillet steak with sauce Bordelaise, fresh Tagliatelle carbonara with shaved white truffle and roasted gammon.

2014 Clos du Marquis
Regular price £160.75 Save £-160.75Own by the Delon family of Leoville Las Cases, Clos du Marquis was created in 1902. The name was taken from the Petit Clos, the residency of the Marquis de Las Cases, and the estate consists of a patchwork selection of vineyards within the appellation of Saint Julien which were not historically part of the Domaine de Leoville. Having been created after the 1855 classification, the estate has no ranking, but represents an excellent expression of the region.
TASTING NOTES
Attractive, perfumed aromas of red berries, wild heather, cedar and raspberry coulis. Opulent on the palate, with genteel tannin giving structure to red and black fruit characters, finishing with a mineral element. 50% new oak adds a plush smoothness to the overall experience.
FOOD PAIRING
Best for beef dishes, although the wine is quite versatile and will serve well with a wide array of full-bodied dishes.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
An impressive, accessible Saint Julien, with excellent ageing potential – this will drink well until 2034 and beyond.
2016 Chateau Batailley
Regular price £80.50 Save £-80.50Also available: 2008 Vintage
ABOUT THE WINE
Chateau Batailley is Borie-Manoux’s and the Castéja-family’s flagship winery. One of the oldest estates in the Médoc the name is derived from the battle (“bataille”) that took place during the Hundred Years’ War and where the chateau and vineyard are sited today. The estate is currently experimenting with biodynamic farming techniques on a 5- hectare parcel. Overall vinification is pretty standard, with hand-harvested grapes fully de-stemmed before fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation takes place partly in the tank, and partly in the barrel, and the wine is then aged in 60% new French oak for about 16 months before bottling. Since 1995, subtle changes have seen the wines achieve more delicacy and purity of fruit character, resulting in wines of greater finesse which still remain true to their Pauillac roots.
TASTING NOTES
A rare, but beautiful blend of fresh red berries of raspberry and rose hip married with the savoury meatiness and cigar box with a sweet vanilla undertone, not to mention the charming crushed violets. A truly elegant and complex claret, which shows power in a restrained way, but still managed to have polished and gripping tannins that are dazzling and promising facing forward. This wine is now in its drinking window, and will stay there until the late 2040s…
FOOD PAIRING
Roast mallard with radicchio and pear salad, braised veal shank with winter root vegetable purée. Any seared & dry-aged beef cut should also pair impeccably.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
This wine will never cease to surprise, glass after glass, and is unquestionably moreish. Drinking beautifully now but still retains some solid ageing potential.
