2019 Domaine Gilles Flacher Saint Joseph Terra Louis
Regular price £45.70 Save £-45.70The Flacher family has been making wine in the northern Rhone since 1806. Gilles is now managing an estate of 7 hectares, mainly in the Saint-Joseph appellation. Their wines are all from single-vineyard sites situated in and around the commune of Charnas, on the western banks of the Rhone. The majority of the vineyards are on terraced slopes, making mechanisation impossible, and most vineyard work continues to be done by hand.
TASTING NOTES
Very dark in colour. There is a swirl of oak, dark chocolate, and a touch of sweet blackberries on the nose. 50% new oak; prominent but not overwhelming. The palate holds sleek black fruit that lingers juicily on the finish.
FOOD PAIRING
Perfect with a dry aged ribeye, slow roasted lamb shoulder and venison.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
A standout staff-favourite; high-quality and supremely enjoyable.
2020 Domaine des Trois Cellier, Chateauneuf du Pape "Cuvee Marceau"
Regular price £35.70 Save £-35.70In 2007 Marceau (Marc) Cellier decided to retire and hand over his vineyards to his three children (Ludovic, Julien and Benoit) and Nathalie (Ludovic's wife). They are the 8th generation of the Cellier family to work the vine and to make top-class Rhone wines. Domaine les 3 Cellier was thus born on August 1st, 2007, with the breakup of Domaine Saint Benoit. The Cellier family retained 13.4 hectares of vines, all within the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation.
TASTING NOTES
45% lees ageing in new French oak; production is only 250 cases per vintage. Medium-bodied, with red fruit, soft texture and a forward, approachable character accentuated by herb-touched complexity. A real charmer.
FOOD PAIRING
It is excellent with beef-dishes, but can also pair beautifully with lighter meats like pork.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
Named in honour of their father, this is a special expression of the Cellier family vineyards, a wine which gives immense pleasure.
2022 Domaine des Trois Cellier, Chateauneuf du Pape blanc "Cuvee Insolente"

TASTING NOTES
Production is very low, less than 100 cases per vintage. This wine has a pale yellow colour tinted with a hint of green. The distinctive personality of Roussanne gives a powerful and complex wine, harmoniously balanced, with aromas of flowers and spice - paprika and fenugreek. The mouth is powerful but pleasant with a final soft and unctuous, yet dry, finish. This wine can be kept in a good cellar for 8 to 10 years.
FOOD PAIRING
Perfect with scallops or ravioli stuffed with goat cheese and honey. It should be drunk at a temperature between 12° to 14° C - a tad less cold than other white wines.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
Less well-known than the red wines from this appellation, the whites are something of a hidden gem; full-bodied and wonderfully complex, this is a prime example of how utterly beautiful they can be.
