ABOUT THE WHISKY
Pronounced 'Cull-Eela' the distillery is situated on the North-Eastern shores of Islay in a cove that has magnificent views across the Sound of Islay to the spectacular Paps of Jura. The barley used here is still malted locally at Port Ellen and they draw on pure spring water that has risen from limestone in nearby Loch Nam Ban to fall to the sea at Caol Ila in a clear crystal stream. Despite being the largest distillery on Islay - it has 6 copper stills producing 3.65 million litres annually, which is double that of even Laphroaig - Caol Ila releases a relatively tiny amount of whisky annually as single-malt. Founded in 1846 and substantially renovated between 1972 and 1974, in the days before this market had really taken off it was destined for a huge array of blends across the whole whisky industry. This practice continues to this day with most of the malt produced going into the Johnnie Walker blends; but with a range of high-quality single-malts now also being produced. Peated, on average, to 35ppm, the Caol Ila style is relatively genteel, with a salty tang and a herbal/earthy, rather than iodine/seaweed, base. Since 1999 the distillery has also experimented with unpeated special-releases.

TASTING NOTES
The nose is beautifully subtle with hints of peat and pine smoke, charred embers, new leather and cinnamon. A full bodied palate delivers more of that sweet, smoky character as the cinnamon combines with salted fudge and vanilla flavours to build to a satisfyingly long-lasting and well-rounded finish. A very easily enjoyed peated malt.

FRIARWOOD SAYS
A UK exclusive with only 262 bottles produced this 10 year old is surprisingly rich for a relatively youthful release, full-flavoured and very rewarding to drink.
