Classified as Cru Bourgeois. The name was formed from Sociando who was a nobleman and own the property in 1633 and Mallet a naval officer who over a century later put the two names together. It was not until 1969 that Jean Gautreau came to the rescue and purchase the vineyard who by then had less than 8 hectares under vine. Following an additional land purchase, the property is now 85 hectares. Situated in the north of the appellation Haut-Medoc it has a wonderful view of the Gironde River. Planted with the same amount of Cabernet Sauvignon than Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. Contrary to many properties Sociando-Mallet does not believe in green harvesting to reduce yield indeed they have one of the highest yields in the region but they rather trust nature to do this naturally. On average 95% of the harvest is aged in mostly new French oak barrels.

The wines are deep, round, rich, ripe. In the left bank 2009 were stunning. Plenty of sublime wines were produced in the Medoc. Many wines from Pauillac to St Estephe are so good they are close to off the charts.
