ABOUT THE WINE
A fort in the 13th century (hence the name, derived from the Gascon word for knife), Coutet first became a wine estate in 1643. The second-largest property in Barsac, with 35 hectares of vineyard planted with Sèmillon (75%), Sauvignon blanc (23%) and Muscadelle (2%). Classified Sauternes 1er Cru Classé, Coutet ferments their wines in oak, and ages them in new French oak barrels for 18 months. The wines display impressive concentration and refinement; and were a favourite of Thomas Jefferson, who wrote in the 1780s that the wines of Coutet were the finest in the entire appellation of Barsac.

TASTING NOTES
Ripe citrus fruit and delicate floral honey aromas; rich and refined on the palate. Superbly balanced, with a bright, fresh character that keeps you coming back for the next sip.

FOOD PAIRING
Balanced enough for any dessert, especially fruit-driven trifles and meringue pie; or for true hedonists, pair with foie gras.

FRIARWOOD SAYS
The warm vintage combined beautifully with the natural restraint of Coutet to produce an exceptional example of the wine from this estate.
