ABOUT THE WINE
Situated in the heart of Saint Julien - an outstanding appellation of no less than 11 classified growths – at 102 hectares this single vineyard is one of the largest in the Médoc. The estate has a rich history; once the property of Sir John Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury his death at the Battle of Castillon in 1453 ceded ownership back to the French after centuries of English residency. Chateau Talbot itself was classified as one of ten Fourth Growths in 1855 and is now undeniably one of the most famous wines of the region; recognised for the consistent quality of its vintages. As Bettane & Desseauve observe in their Guide to French Wine ‘For many, Talbot embodies the ideal Saint Julien; a generous bouquet, extremely enduring and dependable during aging’. Although pleasant and rounded even in its youth Talbot is a classically delicious champion of longevity – during which time its makers like to boast ‘it has the courtesy of being in a good mood every day…’
TASTING NOTES
Although the nose displays those traditional aromas of cedar and sweet Havana tobacco further exploration elicits a wine altogether more aromatic - as well as round and soft on the palate. Notes of sweet black cherry and dried currants mingle with herbs & spices; violets; toffee and the outdoor scents of smoke, hedgerow and cut grass. Medium bodied with caressing tannins this has one of the nicest mouthfeels of the 2006 vintage.
FOOD PAIRING
Venison with red wine jus and gratin dauphinoise would be sublime. A pot roasted pheasant with smoked lardons & leeks would also make a fine pairing.
