ABOUT THE SPIRIT
Founded in 1876 by the former manager of Glendronach, John Duff, who left Scotland in 1888 to seek his fortune in the colonies. He returned in the 1890s, and founded other distilleries, but lost everything when the whisky market crashed in 1899. This left Glenlossie in the hands of the surviving members of the consortium, which reconstituted as the Glenlossie-Glenlivet Distillery Company. They survived the recession, but were forced to close the distillery in 1917 due to the First World War. In 1919 the distillery passed into the hands of Distillers Company Ltd (which would eventually become part of Diageo), and resumed production. Most of the original buildings were destroyed in a fire in 1929, but the site was quickly rebuilt, and in the 1960s the number of stills was increased from four to six. A sister-distillery, Mannochmore, was built on the site in 1971, and the distillery is also home to a bonded warehouse which stores over 200 000 casks of maturing whisky from Diageo’s various distilleries. The malt produced by Glenlossie is held in very high regard by blenders as a ‘finishing-malt’, used to add complexity to a blend, and as such less than 1% of the distillery’s annual production is retained for sale as single-malt. Both official and independent bottlings are extremely rare.
TASTING NOTES
Oak-driven aromas, with dried grasses and ripe pear in the background, along with something akin to agave. The palate shows more ripe fruit, wood-spice and a hint of smoke, which combines with the fruit-character in a manner almost reminiscent of a genteel mezcal. Rich, yet subtle, remarkably easy to drink neat; an excellent, highly individual single-malt.

FOOD PAIRING
Best enjoyed neat, although it does have enough punch to be served on the rocks. Would pair nicely with a cheese platter.
