ABOUT THE WINE
Founded in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori, Ornellaia began as a project to explore the possibilities offered by Bordeaux varieties in the rolling hills of Bolgheri. The estate rose to prominence as the vineyards matured in the 1990s, under the watchful eye of Michel Rolland as consulting oenologist, and was controversially acquired by the Frescobaldi family via Robert Mondavi, to whom Lodovico sold the estate in 2002. The esteem in which the estate is held is such that the appellation of Bolgheri Superiore DOC was created specifically for Ornellaia, and for other wines made in its image.
TASTING NOTES
A blend of 51% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot. 2011 was characterised by very favourable growing conditions which helped to deliver an exceptional vintage. It perfectly expresses the qualities of Ornellaia. The wine is an intense ruby red. On the nose you'll find rich, fully ripe fruit with hints of toastiness. On the palate, the wine is powerfully concentrated, with powerful, yet silky tannins with no feeling of heaviness. The finish is exceptionally long with a welcome crispness throughout.
FOOD PAIRING
Excellent with the dark meat from poultry and game-birds, perfect for a wild boar stew, a quintessentially Tuscan treat.

One stop shop for Super Tuscans! I was directed to buy this vintage of the Ornellaia by the shopkeeper, and I'm glad I listened. It was way beyond my expectations...
