ABOUT THE WINE
Located on a historic plateau near Aix-en-Provence, Domaine des Masques has a rich history stretching back to the Knights Templar and the ancient Gauls. Vines were first planted in 1992, and the estate was revitalised in 2003 by Carl and Sophie Mestdagh. Farmed with a deep respect for nature and organic principles (though not certified), the estate’s vineyards are guided in the cellar by renowned Rhône winemaker Yves Cuilleron, ensuring structure, freshness, and precision in every bottle.
The 2019 Cuvée Essentielle Rouge is a beautifully approachable expression of Provence — supple, spicy, and deeply enjoyable.
TASTING NOTES
Gently pressed to reduce harsh tannin extraction and aged for 6 months in barrel, this wine is fresh, bright, and packed with blackberry, cherry, and a touch of white pepper spice. On the palate, it’s supple and fruit-forward, with soft tannins and a clean, easy-drinking style. A charming, balanced red blend that captures the soul of southern France.
FOOD PAIRING
Excellent with charcuterie, spare ribs, or even grilled vegetables. Its fresh fruit character and light spice also pair well with Mediterranean fare and lighter meat dishes.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
Produced under the watchful eye of Yves Cuilleron, this wine is crafted with care and minimal intervention. While best enjoyed young, it will evolve nicely through 2025. A certified organic red that offers excellent value and a genuine sense of place.
