FRIARWOOD FINE WINE                                                                JULY 2006

AUTUMN & WINTER 2006

WINE COURSES

Friarwood invites you to join us for a new season of wine tastings. Come to the one that takes your particular fancy or come to them all! Although each session stands alone, the season can be done in its entirety, because each evening has a different focus.

The tastings are fun and informal, but also structured and informative. They are held in the relaxed surroundings of the shop and the wine tasting will be accompanied by a talk as well as simple foods such as bread, cheeses and cold meats. We aim to take the snobbery out of drinking and talking about fine wine, and most of all, to have an enjoyable evening.

Introduction to Tasting. Tuesday 5th September 2006 - £30

An introductory session during which we will run through the basics of tasting wine and what it is that affects the style and flavour of wines. We shall also look into what it is that differentiates a wine of quality and how to spot wine faults. And you will probably taste some excellent wines that you may never have had before. A great session which will provide a sound basis for the further enjoyment of wine.

Introduction to Burgundy. Tuesday 19th September 2006 - £40

Burgundy is one of the classic wine regions of the world and something of an enigma. It has deep-rooted traditions that go back centuries as well as some of the most innovative winemakers in France. It is very much in the front line of the battle between the Old School and New, and it is particularly interesting, therefore, to see the varying styles of wine emerging from the region.

The Wines of Italy. 3rd October 2006 - £40

Explore the unique and idiosyncratic world of Italian wine, from their light, zesty whites and fun frizzante to the deeper, darker, brooding reds. With innumerable grape varieties and a mixture of ancient tradition and cutting-edge technology, Italy is land of tremendous vinous contrasts. In this session we look at some of the fascinating things happening in what must be one of the wine world’s most vibrant countries.

Introduction to Bordeaux. 17th October 2006 - £45

Bordeaux is one of the classic wine regions of France and some of the most mythical (and most expensive) wines in the world are produced. For many it is the apex of wine production and appreciation, and it has been such for centuries. What is the secret to its enduring appeal, particularly at a time when the traditional world order of wine is going through a time of such upheaval? The only way to begin to answer that is to tuck in!

Rhone and Southern France. 7th November 2006 - £35

From the steep, narrow valley of the Northern Rhone to the flatter Southern Rhone and into warm, Mediterranean Southern France: a region in which the wines are as diverse as the land. There are the big, meaty reds, the soft, spicy ones, whites that are crisp and fresh and those that are bursting with aromatics and spice. There are those well-known and well-loved wines such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape that you may have had before, as well as some that you may not have yet discovered – it will be good fun doing so.

Top New World Wines. 21st November 2006 - £40

As the recent ‘Judgement of Paris’ tasting has proven, the Old World no longer has the right to look down its collective nose at the producers of the New World, and no one who loves wine can afford to do so either. The New World is where wine exploration takes place on a daily basis and the true wine pioneers are in the Americas, Africa and the Antipodes, constantly experimenting with different grape varieties and new methods of production, and the blend of tradition and innovation is creating some surprising new classics!

Christmas Wines. Tuesday 5th December 2006 - £50

We take you through the wine-drinker’s ideal Christmas: from Champagne through White and Red Burgundy and Claret, to Sauternes and Port; these are the wines we believe would make this Christmas one to remember. So pick up a few hints for the big day, as well as enjoying some preliminary Christmas cheer! A fun and enlightening seasonal tutored tasting.

Bordeaux Cru Classé. Tuesday 12th December 2006 - £75

Ah, Bordeaux! For many people the best thing about winter and Christmas in particular is the excuse to splash out on a really special bottle of Claret. We do just that in this special tasting, several times over! Expect some of the top names of the Médoc, St-Emilion and Pomerol to make an appearance. It’s going to be a special event for anyone who loves their Claret, or for anyone who wants to learn more about the famed wines of Bordeaux.
