As far as reputation goes it is to the North that one should look for the great Rhône wines, where Syrah vines cling to the steep terraced slopes. Côte-Rôtie, Crozes-Hermitage, St-Joseph and the delectable Cornas.
Yet alongside these full-bodied heavy-weights lies one of the great French white wines, Condrieu, where the Viognier grape reaches its apogee and is as luxurious and perfumed a wine as you could wish to find.
The greatest expression of the Southern Rhône is Châteauneuf-du-Pape but look out for affordable alternatives in the neighbouring ACs of Gigondas and Vacqueras.
