CHATEAU RIEUSSEC, 1er CRU CLASSÉ SAUTERNES
ABOUT SAUTERNES:
auternes is the name of a commune, a village, a wine and also a district which is the most renowned district for the making of sweet wine in the world. The 1,600 hectares of Sauternes’ vineyards are located 40 kilometres south-east of the city of Bordeaux and includes 5 communes. What makes its wines so exceptional is the special microclimate of the area along with the proximity of the river Garonne. The dominant grape varieties are Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle which are grown on gravel over limestone, clayey and sandy soils.
PRODUCER NOTES:
After a succession of many owners since the 18th Century, Château Rieussec was acquired by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) in 1984. The vineyard covers 93 hectares extending from the border of Fargues and Sauternes, adjacent to Château d’Yquem on the east, and overlooking the left bank of the Garonne. After Château d’Yquem, it has the highest altitude. Since its acquisition by Lafite-Rothschild, Rieussec has become a legitimate superstar in the Sauternes.
