Friarwood Fine Wine are pleased to announce our Winter Wine Courses for 2005/06. These educational tastings are designed to be both insightful as well as informal without any of the stuffiness or snobbery that usually accompanies fine wine tastings. We will be using the best of our broad portfolio of wines to demonstrate the various points at each session. The wines will be accompanied by a simple buffet of appropriate cheeses, cold meats, olives and breads.
Introduction to Tasting. Tuesday 8th November 2005 - £30
An introductory session during which we will run through the basics of tasting wine and what it is that affects the style and flavour of wines. We shall also look into what it is that differentiates a wine of quality and how to spot wine faults. A great session which will provide a sound basis for the further enjoyment of wine.
Med Red. Tuesday 22nd November 2005 - £30
On a cold November evening we warm ourselves with the red wines of the Mediterranean countries, taking in Italy, Spain, Southern France and Lebanon, examining some of the multitude of different grape varieties and the wide-ranging styles of wines produced in the region. This is, after all, where Western civilization’s love affair with the vine began.
Christmas Wines. Tuesday 6th December 2005 - £40
We take you through the wine-drinker’s ideal Christmas: from Champagne through White and Red Burgundy and Claret, to Sauternes and Port, these are the wines we believe would make this Christmas one to remember. So, pick up a few hints for the big day, as well as enjoying some preliminary Christmas cheer! A fun and enlightening seasonal tutored tasting.
Bordeaux Cru Classé. Tuesday 13th December 2005 - £75
Ah, Bordeaux! For many people the best thing about winter and Christmas in particular is the excuse to splash out on a really special bottle of Claret. We do just that in this special tasting, several times over! Expect some of the top names of the Médoc, St-Emilion and Pomerol to make an appearance. It’s going to be a special event for anyone who loves their Claret, or for anyone who wants to learn more about the famed wines of Bordeaux.
CHRISTMAS/NEW YEAR INTERVAL
Introduction to Tasting – New Year, New Wine. Tuesday 17th January 2006 - £30
Why not branch out with your drinking and break away from the tried (or tired) and tested favourites? This is an introductory session for those looking to expand their drinking horizons and learn more about wine. We will teach the basics of tasting, outline different methods of wine production and talk about the relative merits of grape varieties. An evening that should help to further your enjoyment of wine in the future, good fun too.
Winter Whites. Tuesday 31st January 2006 - £40
Some white wine can be as rich and warming as a good red. Doubtful? Come to this session and see what we mean, deep in the heart of winter we break open the full-bodied and powerful whites that will make you think again. No Sauvignon Blancs or Pinot Grigios here, be warned! Learn about White Burgundy, White Rhône and some of the big whites of the New World.
Bordeaux Revisited. Tuesday 21st February 2006 - £40
Bordeaux again…just because we can. And because we love it. A slightly more basic level course than the previous Bordeaux evening, this one is aimed at those who don’t know their Pauillac from their Pomerol and their St-Estephe from their St-Emilion. We look at wines that typify each of the major appellations of Bordeaux. A perfect evening for the novice and the intermediate Claret drinker, or simply anyone interested in tasting some of the finest wines the world has to offer.
