Friarwood Fine Wine are pleased to announce our Spring Wine Courses for 2005. These educational tastings are designed to be both insightful as well as informal without any of the stuffiness or snobbery that usually accompanies fine wine tastings. We will be using the best of our broad portfolio of wines to demonstrate the various points at each session. The wines will be accompanied by a simple buffet of cheeses, cold meats, olives and breads.
Introduction to Tasting. Tuesday 1st March 2005 - £25
An introductory session during which we will run through the basics of tasting wine and what it is that affects the style and flavour of wines. We shall also look into what it is that differentiates a wine of quality and how to spot wine faults. A great session which will provide a sound basis for the further enjoyment of wine.
Introduction to Bordeaux. Tuesday 22nd March 2005 - £30
Bordeaux produces some 850 million bottles of wine a year, 25% of all AOC wine in France. This course is designed to give an overview of the wine region as a whole as well as investigating the classic left and right banks of the Gironde and also some of the more interesting wines emerging from the petit chateaux of Bourg and Blaye.
New World. Tuesday 12th April 2005 - £30
The New World revolutionized the wine industry in the latter half of the twentieth century with the introduction of varietal labelling, overdue technological advancements and steadily improving wine quality. Many of the Old World’s native grapes have taken enthusiastically to their new homelands, and the different climates, soils and altitudes give distinctive characteristics to the wines of each New World country.
Champagne Masterclass. Tuesday 3rd May 2005 - £50
The pop of a Champagne cork is one of the most evocative of sounds and what follows is considered by many to be at the zenith of drinking experiences. In this session we will look at the production of Champagne, the different grapes used and the variety of styles available. We will also discuss what makes Champagne so special and ask what other sparkling wines are doing to win back ground. It will be an informative evening, with some rather special bubbly and, most of all, it’ll be great fun!
Introduction to Tasting. Tuesday 24th May 2005 - £25
A repeat of our introductory session during which we will run through the basics of tasting wine and what it is that affects the style and flavour of wines. We shall also look into what it is that differentiates a wine of quality and how to spot wine faults. A great session which will provide a sound basis for the further enjoyment of wine.
Introduction to Burgundy. Tuesday 14th June 2005 - £30
Burgundy is a mystery to many people: that large swathe of eastern France that begins with Chablis in the north and ends with Beaujolais in the south. Equally as important for white wine as for red, the joy – as well as the sheer confusion – of Burgundy is the myriad of subtle nuances that distinguish one wine from another, from one village to the next. During the evening we intend to do away with some of the mysteries of Burgundy and to explore the wide variety of wines that come out of the ‘belly’ of France.
Wines of Italy. Tuesday 5th July 2005 - £40
Italy now produces some of the most varied wines in the world: from the unique native grape varieties such as Trebbiano and Nero d’Avola to the international varieties of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, made famous by the ‘Super Tuscans’. A fascinating course in which we try and give an overview of all the exciting things happening in Italian winemaking, from the traditional to the innovative.
Phileas Fogg’s Wine Tour. 26th July 2005 - £30
We whisk you around the world in an evening, stopping en route to sample archetypal wines from each major wine-producing country, taking in no less than six continents. Different soil types, climatic conditions, grape varieties and cultural traditions have ensured that our planet has plenty to offer the quaffing wayfarer - this evening will attempt to show you a little of what’s out there.
